Oman- MECA marks world days on birds, biodiversity and turtles


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) marked three environmental events recently.

These events included the International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), which falls on May 9, International Day for Biodiversity, which falls on May 22 and the World Turtle Day, which falls on May 23.

These days were celebrated under the auspices of H E Najeeb bin Ali al Rowas, Undersecretary in the ministry.

Eng Suleiman bin Nasser al Akhzami, director general of Nature Conservation, delivered a speech at the event.

He added that the celebration of this year's IMBD was held under the theme 'Unifying our Voices for Bird Conservation'.

It aimed at raising awareness about the threats faced by birds. He also said how these issues are an important component of biodiversity. Eng Akhzami also highlighted the importance of celebrating World Biodiversity Day, marking the 25th anniversary of the convention.

Aziza bint Saud al Athubiya, chairperson of the Qurum Nature Reserve, delivered a lecture on the Birds Survey Project in the wetlands reserve in the Governorate of Al Wusta.
She talked about the survey project, the numbers of migratory birds, their types and migration routes.

Two documentaries were screened on the Green Turtle Project and on migratory birds.
The event concluded by honouring lecturers and participants.
