Oman- Khazzan gas production hits peak level ahead of schedule

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Oman's Khazzan gas field, which is operated by global oil giant BP, has already started hitting the peak production level of 1bn cubic feet (bcf) per day in April, ahead of its schedule, according to a senior official of the Ministry of Oil and Gas.

Speaking to Muscat Daily on the sidelines of an event recently, H E Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil and Gas said the progress is very good at Khazzan gas field project and it is reaching the level of 1bcf per day on regular basis.

According to BP, in the phase one of the Khazzan development project, it has dug over 200 wells that are feeding into a two-train central processing facility. The first phase production is expected to plateau at 1bcf of gas per day.

BP and the Ministry of Oil and Gas had announced in September that the production at Khazzan started and was likely to reach peak levels by the end of second quarter of 2018. However, as per the ministry officials, production has started hitting peak levels from April onwards, nearly three months ahead of the schedule.

'Due to the efforts taken by everybody, production has reached peak levels ahead of the schedule. However, production levels are occasionally dipping due to technical and other production-related problems. Our aim is to maintain the plateau at this level,' H E Aufi said.

According to BP, extracting gas tightly held in the old, hard rocks of Khazzan is a challenging task and the experience gained by Omani engineers in this project will enhance the capability of Oman's oil and gas sector.
