Kuwait elected vice chair of FAO regional conf.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, May 11 (KUNA) -- The 34th session of FAO Regional Conference for the Near East (NERC) elected Kuwait on Friday as deputy president of the coming session, due in Oman in 2020.
The just-ended session started at FAO HQ here on Monday, May 7, under the chairmanship of Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Ghazi Zuayter and gathered 12 ministers, seven deputy ministers and other senior officials from 30 Near East countries.
Kuwait was represented by Ambassador to Italy Sheikh Ali Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and Representative to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization Youssef Jheil The conferees unanimously approved Muscat, the capital city of the Sultanate of Oman, as venue of the 35th NERC session and the State of Kuwait as deputy president for a two-year term starting from 2020.
Speaking to KUNA, Ambassador Sheikh Ali Al-Khaled expressed joy for selecting the sisterly Oman as host, and Kuwait as deputy president, of the coming conference.
"The unanimous approval of Kuwait as deputy president of the conference reflects the trust of the countries of the region in Kuwait's role inside this essential UN agency," he said.
"The conferees welcomed Kuwait's candidacy for this post which will bolster the country's leading role in prodding sustainable economic development and humanitarian action in the light of the vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah," he added. (end) mn.gb
