Erekat urges boycott of Jerusalem U.S. embassy opening ceremony

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Ramallah, May 7 (Petra) -- Secretary of the PLO Executive Committee, Saeb Erekat, Monday urged all world nations, including members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organizations and religious authorities, to boycott the opening ceremony of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem next week.

Erekat said in a statement that participation in the opening ceremony would give legitimacy to the US decision recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's acapital and promote the silence on the occupation authority's "colonialist" policies and annexation.

Any country participating in this ceremony is "a complict in the crime of violating the Palestinian people's right to its sovereign capital and breaching its land," Erekat said.

He said Washington was adamant on pursuing a policy of fomenting chaos and ignoring the internationa law, and has accordingly recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, moved its embassy to the city and violated its obligations under the international law, including United Nations Security Council resolution 478 and its pledges towards the peace process.

The US move, he said, is not only illegal, but it will fail to achieve just and lasting peace in the region.
