Iraqi candidate survives assassination attempt

(MENAFN) An Iraqi Shi'ite candidate who is running for the upcoming parliamentary survived an assassination attempt in the capital of the country, Bas News reported.

The targeted candidate, according to a statement, was Jasim Sa'idi from the Ansar AL-Awfia Movement, one of the paramilitary groups operating under the umbrella of Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi.

He was traveling through a public street in Baghdad when unknown armed men opened fire at his convoy, but he survived the assassination attempt.

This comes after an Iraqi candidate was killed on Sunday in Iraq's capital after being gunned down while passing by a street fight.

Since 14th April when the election campaigns in Iraq began, three candidates have been assassinated with several others surviving assassination attempts.
