NHRC and European Parliament sign MoU

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the European Parliament have signed a consultative Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the exchange of expertise and consultation between them.
This is the first MoU of its kind for the Parliament with a national institution for human rights in the Gulf and Arab countries, reflecting the credibility of the Committee at the global level, and the culmination of its efforts and work for more than 16 years.
The agreement was signed in Brussels by President of the NHRC Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri, and Chairman of the Human Rights Subcommittee of the European Parliament Antonio Panziri.
The MoU is one of the most important mechanisms through which the human rights developments in Qatar are implemented and followed up. It will pave the way for closer co-operation between the NHRC and the European Parliament to carry out many joint programmes in the field of human rights.
It will also allow the European Parliament to identify and learn more about the repercussions of the blockade and how to address them.
Al-Marri said that the signing of the agreement will strengthen the partnership and co-operation between the committee and the European Parliament in order to address all challenges resulting from the human rights situation, as well as dealing with the repercussions of the blockade of Qatar.
He added that the memorandum involves the exchange of expertise with a view to enhancing the work of members and staff in various disciplines and exchanging experiences on international human rights conventions, including ILO conventions, noting that an annual work plan has been developed with regular evaluation to monitor their implementation, dictated by projects between the two sides.
