Greece calls on Turkey to demonstrate commitment to EU membership

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Greece called on Turkey to show its commitment to boosting its prospects for membership of the European Union.

A statement released by the Foreign Ministry in the wake of the European Commission's progress report on Turkey said that Greece has "repeatedly expressed its firm support" for Ankara's European aspirations.

"However, recent developments have once again made it clear that it is up to Turkey itself to show in practice and to what extent it wants to move ahead on its European course," it said.

Referring to the latest tensions between the two parties, the statement went on to say "We welcome the European Commission"s statement that Ankara"s provocative behaviour towards member states of the European Union, primarily in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, is not simply a bilateral matter, but also concerns the Union's regional security."
