Turkey agrees to stay in touch with US on Syria

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan discussed the crisis in Syria on Wednesday and agreed to stay in close touch, the White House said in a statement.

"President Donald J. Trump spoke today with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey to discuss the current crisis in Syria. The two leaders agreed to stay in close contact about the situation," the White House said, providing no further details.

Ankara considers the YPG to be a terrorist organization, but the U.S. sees the group as effective partner in the fight against Islamic State and provides it military supplement, stirring disagreement between the two NATO members.

Turkey stormed the northwest Syrian town of Afrin 18 March after a two-month offensive to push the YPG out of the region. It has repeatedly threatened to push its operations further east to Manbij where U.S. troops are stationed alongside the SDF.
