Electric mosquito swatter blamed for causing fire

An employer and her domestic worker had a lucky escape when a fire caused by a faulty electric mosquito swatter broke out in a house in Tai Po in the New Territories in the early hours of Tuesday.

The fire broke out in a village house at Treasure Spot Garden on Tung Tsz Road in Tai Po at 3am. The 26-year-old employer was woken by the smell of smoke, Headline Daily reported.

She then woke the domestic worker and they took her two dogs and fled the house as the blaze spread. Firefighters quickly arrived and it took then 20 minutes to put out the fire. No one was hurt but the fire gutted the house .

The two women had inhaled a lot of smoke and felt unwell, but refused to go to hospital. After an initial investigation, firemen believed the fire started because of a short circuit in an electric mosquito swatter, the Oriental Daily reported.

The maid said she had plugged in the rechargeable mosquito swatter and put it on a sofa in the living room before going to bed. It was understood that the electric mosquito swatter with a two-pin plug came from mainland China.
