Amman, April 9 (Petra) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Jamal Sarayrah met with President of the Bundesrat (German Federal Council) and Mayor of Berlin, Michael Muller, and his accompanying delegation and discussed means of enhancing bilateral relations and regional developments.

During the meeting, which was attended by German Ambassador to Jordan Birgitta Siefker-Eberle, Sarayrah and Mueller commended the strong ties between the "two friendly countries" in different areas.

Sarayrah affirmed the historical and strong relations between Jordan and Germany at all levels, expressing Jordan's appreciation of Germany's support for the kingdom to overcome the current economic challenges.

He also briefed the visiting delegation on hardships Jordan faces as a result of regional turmoil, pointing out that hosting about 1.3 million Syrian refugees in the kingdom and providing them with basic services had aggravated economic challenges.

On the Middle East peace process, Sarayrah stressed that security and stability in the Middle East would not be achieved without finding a just solution to the Palestinian issue and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He said that realizing comprehensive peace in the region would guarantee that funds currently used for military purposes will be directed towards development and prosperity.

On Iraq, Sarayrah noted that the country has achieved important victories over terrorism and terrorist gangs and has begun to recover. He also stressed the importance of the international community's support to help the country promote security and stability.

On the Syria crisis, Sarayrah reaffirmed the need to realize a political solution in Syria to safeguard the country's sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

He also outlined Jordan's role in combating terrorism, which tries to distort the image of Islam, pointing out that Islam is based on tolerance, love and acceptance of the other. Jordan is a model of moderation and coexistence between Muslims and Christians, he said.

Muller, for his part, praised the advanced level of the Jordanian-German relations, noting that Germany is seeking to help Jordan overcome challenges resulting from hosting a large number of Syrian refugees.

He also stressed the importance of intensifying efforts of the international community to revive the peace process in the Middle East.

He said that "the solution in Syria is achieved with the help of the super powers", highlighting the importance of alleviating the suffering of the Syrians who have had sought refuge in many countries in the region and Europe.
