Egypt: 4 militias killed amid Sinai operation

(MENAFN) As part of an ongoing security operation in the restive Sinai Peninsula, Egyptian security forces killed four militants and detained scores, according to Anadolu Agency which quoted a military spokesman on Sunday.

In a statement, Col. Tamer al-Refai said warplanes hit and destroyed two militant hideouts during operations over the past days, but without pin pointing the location.

The spokesman said three militants were killed in central Sinai and another was killed in northern Sinai, without giving any further details.

The Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a militant insurgency since 2013, when the army ousted Mohamed Morsi in a military coup.

In early February, the Egyptian military launched a major campaign against "terrorist and criminal elements and organizations" across the country, focusing on the northern and central Sinai region, where Islamic State militants have waged a deadly insurgency against Cairo.
