Only civilians affected in ongoing Uruzgan operation
(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Residents of central Uruzgan province are complaining that the ongoing operation in their province has not been productive and instead created problems for them.
Dozens of people, who had gathered in front of the governor€™s house in Tirinkot, the provincial capital, on Sunday claimed the ongoing operation had so far achieved nothing because it had been launched only to earn privileges and ranks.
The protestors, most of them displaced people, said that government forces had failed to ensure security in their areas during the past two years.
Malak Agha Jan, one of the protestors, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Afghan forces had conducted several operations against Taliban in Uruzgan over the past two years, but all ended without any results.
€œThese operations only destroyed civilian houses and gardens€, he said, adding if government officials failed to improve security then they should let the people rule their areas.
Sediqullah, another resident, also said security officials had launched the operation only to pocket privileges and earn next ranks and not to improve security for people.
€œAll residents of Uruzgan have been suffering from a bad situation over the last two years but senior officials are careless€, he said.
The protestors warned of continuing their movement by erecting tents if their complaints were not paid attention.
Amir Mohammad Barakzai, the provincial council head, also said only civilians were affected in the ongoing operation in Uruzgan.
€œIn most operations, houses, gardens and farms of only civilians are destroyed€, he said.
Pajhwok tried to contact local security officials and the governor€™s house for comment in response to people€™s complaints, but no one responded despite hours of attempts.
