Oman- Al Jisr Foundation to work for autistic community

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Autism Spectrum Disorder (autism) is a complex developmental disability that typically occurs in the first three years of life and persists into adulthood. It is a neurological disorder that affects the child's ability to interact with others.

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 160 people are autistic. The three main symptoms of autism include lack of social skills, lack of nonverbal communication skills and repetitive behaviours.

In alignment to the UN International Days, Al Jisr Foundation is looking into autism because it is a major issue that concerns the community. In 2016, Al Jisr cooperated with one of the international schools to establish a specialised institution for autistic children. The building included a clinic, classrooms and additional resources. The cost of the project was approximately RO1.5mn. After further research, a few criticisms arose. The first was that will the institute alienate autistic children from the community? The second criticism was that will merging the different severity levels of autistic children together benefit them?

Therefore, Al Jisr Foundation has decided to conduct a thorough research to understand the needs of autism in terms of health and education in Oman. After understanding the needs of autistic children, Al Jisr Foundation will select projects that they will adopt to assist in finding a valuable solution for the matter. The research will be available to all the institutions that would like to contribute to this important topic. Private organisations are encouraged to participate with Al Jisr.
