Qatar, Malaysia review bilateral ties

Doha: Minister of Economy and Commerce H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani met yesterday with Dato Abdul Malik Kassim, State Minister for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs and Chairman of Penang International Halal Center, Penang State of Malaysia, and his accompanying delegation.

They reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries, and discussed aspects of joint cooperation, especially in the economic, trade and investment fields, and means of developing them.

The meeting also discussed how to promote trade opportunities between the State of Qatar and the State of Penang in various sectors, mainly logistics and manufacturing, halal food and services, electronics, electricity and environment, export and import through Penang Port.

Qatar and Malaysia had signed a number of trade agreements, such as the economic, technical, cultural and information cooperation agreement signed on January 25, 1975 in Doha and the trade agreement between the two countries signed in Kuala Lumpur on May 20, 2009.

Trade between the two countries was nearly QR3.3bn in 2007, and Malaysia is the 22nd trade partner of Qatar.
