Delhiites, clean up your dog poop or pay fine

Your dog poop can cost you Rs. 500, as per a new directive to be implemented by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

People will now have to clean up after their dog passes feces or pay the fine.

The civic body has agreed to the proposal and will soon direct the environment management services department to formulate the policy and implement it by April-end.

SDMC introduced this move after receiving numerous complaints from South Delhi residents about dog poop lying around.

"The practice also increases health risks in the neighborhood," said Nandini Sharma, deputy chairman, standing committee, SDMC.

Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat said they are prepared for the initial resistance that will follow after implementing the step.

He added that every sanitation staff would be authorized to issue challans.

Action will also be taken if residents upload photos of violators on SDMC website giving sufficient information.

Meanwhile, residents' welfare associations feel the defaulters should be warned first.

"The authority should also make arrangements such as developing dog parks, poop-points before implementing norms," Chitra Jain, member, RWA.

Animal rights' activist Rishi Dev expressed concern about harassing people who have adopted stray dogs.
