Afghanistan widely greeted on vanquishing Ireland

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and other officials have congratulated the Afghan squad on qualifying for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

In Friday€™s encounter, Afghanistan shocked Ireland on a good batting surface. The opposition was restricted to 209 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.

The Afghans almost made a hash of a straight forward run chase before coasting home for the loss of five wickets, with five balls to spare in what turned out to be a battle of attrition.

Afghanistan have joined the West Indies as the second qualifier from the Zimbabwe event and the two sides will now go head-to-head into the final at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday.

President Ghani congratulated the national team and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on superb victory. He said: €œI am proud my champions.€

Abdullah also greeted the team and the people of Afghanistan on what he called a huge achievement. He said Afghanistan played incredibly well against Ireland. €œOur champions give happiness to nation. The nation is proud of them.€

National Security Advisor (NSA) Mohammad Hanif Atmar said: €œCongratulations to ACB officials and the whole nation on the great achievements. Well played, blue tigers! You made all of us so proud.€

A Taliban splinter group led by Mullah Rassoul also congratulated the nation on the pulsating cricket win. But the group lamented the continuity of war and killings in the country.

On the other hand, governors, political leaders, civil activists, cricket commentators and foreign board officials also greeted the ACB.
