DOHA: Leading healthcare and pharmaceutical companies from the United Kingdom (UK) are looking to establish their operations and manufacturing units in Qatar, said a top officials of HealthcareUK, which is part of the Department of Health and Social Care and the Department for International Trade.

The UK healthcare providers are also planning to provide education and training services to clinical staff and nurses working in public and private hospitals and clinics in Qatar.

HealthcareUK, the state-backed entity, promotes the country's public and private healthcare providers to do more business overseas by supporting healthcare partnerships between the UK and overseas counterparts.

'We have companies as part of the delegation who would be interested in exploring those kinds of opportunities, including setting up manufacturing units and operations in Qatar, Deborah Kobewka (pictured), Managing Director of HealthcareUK told The Peninsula.

Deborah, who was here leading a trade mission of 16 leading healthcare providers from the UK, added: 'Certainly, that is the purpose of the meeting and discussions to explore what kind of opportunities Qatar has and what is necessary to access those opportunities. I think they would be very open to some of those discussions.

She said that HealthcareUK's role on the mission was to bring the companies to explore the opportunities here in Qatar. It largely depends on the kind of opportunities that are identified, and how the UK organisations might take those opportunities forward.

Asked if the UK companies have conducted any independent market survey to assess the requirements and the demand-supply gaps in the local market, she said that the companies have good understanding about the opportunities in the Qatari market.

'A part of our visit is to have a better understanding about the local market and the requirements, and through our meetings with different private and government entities, including the Ministry of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), and Qatar Chamber's senior representatives, help us build our understanding about the market.

Providing details about the participating companies, Deborah noted that these organisations represent both the private and the NHS sector, the publicly funded national healthcare system for England and one of the four National Health Services of the UK.

Deborah also said that the private sector healthcare companies that underpinned the provision of healthcare by the NHS are very keen to share their expertise with the Qatari healthcare providers.

'We have a great range of capabilities in clinical services; building, managing, and operating hospitals, and other types of healthcare facilities. We have education and training services providers, many of them provide training services to NHS technicians and nurses in the UK, Deborah added.

'We have digital organisations that provide digital technology such as electronic patient records. And we also have representation from England's public health service-NHS, which is a government organisation in the UK responsible for public health. She reiterated that all of these organisations are very keen to do business here in Qatar.

Some of them are already having commercial relationships but they are looking forward to expand that to work together with public and private organisations in Qatar.

'These companies and organistions are willing to work to address shared challenges such as non-communicable diseases and we want to deepen the collaboration and sharing of knowledge through commercial opportunities, Deborah said.
