UAE- Bait Al Oud showcases talents of its graduates

ABU DHABI, 24th March, 2018 (WAM) -- Bait Al Oud in Abu Dhabi, the musical institution dedicated to the preservation and teaching of Arabic musical heritage and its instruments, held a concert to showcase the prodigious talents of its graduates.

Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi under its annual Music Programme, Bait Al Oud held the concert, which featured the qanun instrument, at its city centre premises with expert musician and international concert performer Bassam Abdel Sattar, performing alongside qanun graduates from the past six years.

Renowned musician Naseer Shamma, from Bait Al Oud, said, "The qanun classes are a central element in Bait Al Oud and have existed since the creation of the school in 2008. During the last few years many very successful students not only learned qanun but became consumate performers, able to mesmerise crowds with the unique and beautiful sound of one of Arab music's most important instruments.

"This concert was for them, it gave the stage to the incredibly talented qanun graduates of Bait Al Oud with their teacher Bassam Abdel Sattar and showcased the bright future of Arabic music in Abu Dhabi and the region."

Performing in the concert was Ahmad Hussein al-Sheikh a Syrian national, Hana Boukhris a Tunisian national, Yasmina Khaled Mansour a US citizen, and the two sisters Layla and Miriam Abdulbaki, both also US citizens, under the instruction of qanun expert Abdel Sattar.

Miriam Abdulbaki performed a piece entitled An Oriental Love Story composed by Naseer Shamma, and also a piece called On the Wing of a Butterfly.

Fellow US graduate Layla Abdulbaki performed Batwanes Beek, Tunisian Hana Boukhris performed a piece entitled Words, and Ahmed Hussein al-Sheikh performed Mozart's Turkish March, as well as a piece entitled The East.

Bait Al Oud was established in Abu Dhabi to provide an innovative platform for the younger generations, and a renowned centre for Arabic music. Since its opening, Bait Al Oud has worked to preserve the UAE and region musical heritage and focuses on teaching Arabic music and its instruments such as oud and qanun. Additionally, Bait Al Oud is the first music school in the UAE to teach rebabah.
