DOHA: A wide collection of works by art students of various ages featured at the annual exhibition at the Arts & Crafts Center launched by Lebanese Ambassador to Qatar Hassan Najm on Wednesday.
From painting and calligraphy to sculpture and pottery, the pieces on display were some of the best works produced by the students at the various workshops conducted by the centre's highly qualified instructors in the past year.
'This is our annual exhibition showcasing of all our participants. It is divided into two sections namely under 15 years old and 16 and above, Lina Lotfi Moabi, Executive Director of Arts & Crafts centre, told The Peninsula.
One of the highlights of the show is 48 portraits and landscape paintings depicting different subjects executed in a variety of mediums and style.
'We want to showcase the broad range of art workshops we offer, such as painting, pottery, calligraphy and sculpture. We also want people to know about the standard of our workshops and qualifications of our instructors, said Moabi, adding the centre currently has over 100 students.
'Our students are a mix of nationalities. We have a lot of Qatari people, and expatriate-wise we get a lot of students who come for a chance to show and hone their skills while they adapt living in a new country, said Hassan Jobaili, CFO of Arts & Crafts centre.
Since it was founded, has built a good reputation in the field of art education and has seen increase in the number of people availing of its offerings, said Jobaili.
'We cater to all ages. We have regular classes and private sessions for beginners and advance students, he said.
Though painting is still the most popular art form evident in the number of work on display at the exhibition, three-dimensional art including sculpture and pottery are also gaining popularity.
'More and more people are getting into sculpture and pottery which we have started lately and through which we want to emphasize that art is not just painting, he added.
Also this year, Arts & Crafts launched Resident Artists programme wherein professional artists can come and produce their work in the centre. 'We have around three artists a week that come and teach classes. They share their passion for art to students that they will be able to learn from it and become better artists in the future, added Jobaili.
