AU sends delegation to monitor Egypt's elections

(MENAFN) A delegation of 40 observers will be sent to Egypt by the African Union (AU), monitoring the upcoming presidential elections scheduled on 26028 March, state news agency MENA reported yesterday.

The AU mission, led by the former foreign minister of Mali Abdoulaye Diop, is expected to arrive in Cairo next Saturday.

According to the AU's Information and Communication Directorate, Egypt's National Elections Authority invited the mission to observe the upcoming ballot.

The polls will see incumbent President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi facing Musa Mustafa Musa, the leader of Al-Ghad liberal party.

There is no question the general-turned-president el-Sissi will win a second four-year term. Seven years after a popular uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak in the name of democracy, the 26-28 election will hardly achieve that.
