Rise of Amman population to 4 million imposed new challenges on GAM

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, March 20 (Petra)--Deputy Mayor of Amman Hazem al-Nuaimat said that the population of Amman has risen by 1.5 million over the past ten years to reach 4 million people.

"This increase has imposed new pressure and challenges on the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to provide infrastructure services, organize the city, address economic and social development challenges and make the city attractive for investments," said Nuaimat during a workshop on "Strategic Planning for Local Economic Development" organized by the Center for Mediterranean Integration in partnership with the World Bank and other international organizations.

The workshop aims to improve planning capacities for economic development at host communities of refugees, and support education in countries hosting refugees. It targets 45,000 employees and elected representatives of local governments from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Turkey and Iraq, and selected participants from other countries.

A number of speakers at the workshop reviewed strategic planning for local economic development while other participants focused on economic planning and the exchange of ideas to improve development strategies.
