Oman- 'Child protection committees established in all governorates'


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) has established child protection committees in various governorates, with a hotline number to report abuse cases.

H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Said bin Saif al Kalbani, Minister of Social Development said this in his speech at the third annual session of the eighth term (2015-19) of the Shura Council on Sunday and Monday.

H E Kalbani in his speech also highlighted the need to qualify people with special needs, improving services provided to the elderly and upgrading the e-services provided by the ministry. There was also a wide discussion on the importance of extending the services provided by the ministry to include retirees and job seekers until they are employed.

On the question of scholarships for people with special needs by the Ministry of Higher Education, H E Kalbani said, 'There are about 50 scholarships available in this category. MoSD seeks to rehabilitate children with disabilities by training and employing them.'

In response to some of the Shura Council members' queries regarding women's empowerment, he highlighted the increase in the percentage of women in the government sector (50 per cent) and in the private sector (24 per cent).

'The ministry is also ready to give permits to mosques that are facing obstacle in construction,' the minister said H E Kalbani also announced the ministry's plans to establish a society for the welfare of Omani fishermen, a law to help the elderly and an Autism Children Center Project in cooperation with the private sector.

He added, 'As for the Omani women's associations, 23 associations were built in 2017, where many activities were held as per community's needs.'
