Turkey's Erdogan announces occupying Syria's Afrin city center

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday that the Turkish army has seized control of Syria's Afrin city center after two months of fighting, Xinhua reported.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA), backed by the Turkish army, took over the city center completely as of 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Erdogan said at a ceremony marking the 103rd anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign in Canakkale of northwestern Turkey.

"At this moment Turkish flag is flapping there; the Free Syrian Army flag is flapping," he said.

In January 2018, Turkey launched an offensive called "Olive Branch" on Syria's Afrin Kurds-majority, on the pretext of protecting its boarders from the People's Protection Units (YPG) which Ankara views as "terrorists."
