UAE- People of determination, supporters walk the talk

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Over 750 people walked the streets of Dubai on Friday in the first-ever walkathon for people of determination. Held under the patronage of Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the 3-km walk titled 'We Walk' held at the Dubai Knowledge Park saw people of determination walk hand-in-hand with their supporters. The walkathon was organised by the Tecom Group in association with Al Jalila Foundation.

Taking part in her first walkathon was 10-year old Lynn, who suffers from an extremely rare disease that causes painful swelling and redness of the hands and feet. Lynn was present at the walkathon with her parents and a group of supporters who had painted their hands red to create awareness about the rare disease she suffered from.

"Lynn was perfectly normal two years ago and even ran a marathon when she was eight years old. Now, since she cannot run, we have come out with a group of supporters to be part of this walkathon and also create awareness among others about this disease Lynn is suffering from. Today it is a big opportunity because she can use her wheelchair to be part of the walk," her mother Yumna told Khaleej Times.

Cycling enthusiasts Nick and Delphine Watson were present with their daughter Tia and their son Rio, who has severe disabilities. "I think when you involve a bigger community to take part in such an event, it encourages and involves everyone from different levels to just come together and embrace each other as one big community," Nick said.

"Today we have got with us five disability running chairs for my son and four other people of determination. We have also asked people to join us as volunteers and help us push around these chairs. This lets them interact with the determined ones and to me that is what spreads inclusion and awareness. This is how more people can be involved," Nick added.

All proceeds from the event, including registration fees, optional donations and sponsorships, will be given to Al Jalila Foundation 'iMcan' (enable in Arabic) programme to provide life-transforming prosthetics to adults and children-in-need.

After the walkathon, the determined ones showed their grit and determination through a Taekwondo moves performance, applauded by the crowd. A short session on sign language by a teacher from a language institute of Dubai followed the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Muna Al Muhairbi, head of corporate citizenship and sustainability at Tecom Group, said: "In line with the Year of Zayed objectives, today's walkathon was inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote community participation and raise awareness about people of determination."

A spokesperson from Al Jalila Foundation said: "Al Jalila Foundation is proud to be a part of such an inspiring movement. Community events such as 'We Walk' go a long way towards boosting solidarity and a culture of inclusivity in society."
