Jordan- General absence of war in Darfur, UN official says

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) New York, March 15(Petra)-- Conditions in Darfur are not the same as in 2003, when the conflict began, and there is a general absence of war, special Representative and head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), Jeremiah Mamabolo, said late Wednesday.

During the UN Security Council's session on the situation in Sudan's Darfur region, the official called on holdout armed groups to sign the foundational 2011 peace agreement without delay, saying "that would be the only way the people of Darfur, and indeed the international community, could have any realistic hope for the achievement of durable peace in Darfur." He also urged the Council to use its leverage to have Abdul Wahid al Nur, who leads a faction of the Sudanese Liberation Army, join the peace process.

Sudanese Ambassador to the United Nations, Omer Dahab Fadl said that only the impact of the conflict in Darfur has remained, including the internally displaced persons and development issues related to peace building efforts.
