Kurdistan region first flight to be from Iran

(MENAFN) As the first international flight to the region will take off after the lifting of the prolonged ban on the airports, Kurdistan Region will receive a delegation led by Hassan Danaeifar, former Iran's ambassador to Iraq on Thursday.

This flight will be the first one after more than five months of a total blockade on the airports in Erbil and Sulaymaniya.

Al-Jadeed Newspaper had formerly said that the first international flight would be from Iran to the Kurdistan Region this week, but did not mention whether it would be to Erbil or Sulaymaniya.

The Iraqi PM issued a decree on Tuesday to lift the international flight ban on the Kurdistan Region airports.

Iraq's federal government imposed the international flight ban on Sep. 29 as retaliation for the Kurdistan Region"s independence referendum held four days earlier, which saw 93 percent of the population voting for secession from Iraq.
