Turkey to hold talks with Russia on Syria

(MENAFN) Turkey's offensive against Syria's Afrin will be discussed by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, NTV reported.

The two officials will hold the meeting during Cavusoglu's visit to Moscow which starts from Monday.
The ministers will also discuss developments in East Ghouta, NTV said, without citing anyone.
Cavusoglu is traveling to the Russian capital with Tourism Minister Numan Kurtulmus. The two will attend a tourism fair in the city, the news channel said.

Ankara, since January 20th, has launched a large-scale military offensive against the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Afrin. The attack has so far resulted in scores of civilian casualties and displacement of thousands.

Turkey views the YPG as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has fought a three-decade insurgency in Turkey and is deemed a terrorist group by the United States, the European Union and Turkey. The YPG has been an important ally for the United States in the fight against Islamic State.
