DOHA: Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra is all set for the staging of its sold-out concert tomorrow which shines the spotlight on Ludwig van Beethoven, widely considered as the greatest composer who ever lived. 'Beethoven's Symphony is a concert sponsored by Katara to be held at 7.30pm tomorrow at Katara Opera House.
Featuring the Qatar Philharmonic Brass, the concert will be divided into two parts, commencing with 'Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra by Austrian composer Friedrich Gulda and culminating in Beethoven's 'Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67.
One of the foremost figures in music history, Beethoven had been a tremendous influence across all genres of Western music genres extending for a long period of the 19th century.
His 'Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 is one of the most famous and frequently played compositions in classical music. Its popularity lies in the fact that it reflects Beethoven's distinct musical style.
Gulda was one of the great classical pianists of the post-war era, who made his mark as an accomplished jazz musician, a master of improvisation and a defier of aesthetic conservatism. In five movements, Gulda's 'Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra comprises about half-hour of nonstop musical energy, overflying the history of Western Music to cover classical minuets and rock anthems, European folk tunes and atonality.
Andreas Sebastian Weiser
Led by maestro Andreas Sebastian Weiser, the concert will feature Hassan Moataz El Molla on cello.
Weiser was a finalist in the first annual Arturo Toscanini International Conducting Competition in Italy who became the youngest musical director in Germany when the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra selected him to be their principal conductor.
He has conducted numerous orchestras such as the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Berne Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig.
Born in Cairo, El Molla was exposed to music at a very young age joining the Cairo Conservatory when he was nine and playing his first solo concert with the Cairo Opera Orchestra at 16. He has worked with many well-known conductors and musicians such as J. Livien, L. Slatkin, Y. Bashmet, Gatti and M. Maisky.
Qatar Philharmonic has a long lineup of concerts this season. This month's lineup includes a concert with young musicians of Qatar Music Academy on Tuesday; Fado, The Music of Portugal on March 17; Chopin's First Piano Concerto on March 24; and A Tour of Europe on March 30.
