Ukraine marks holiday of spring and femininity


(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Today, on March 8, someone celebrates the holiday of spring and femininity, and someone marks International Women's Day.

In 1977, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by member states, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. It also called for the creation of favorable conditions for the elimination of discrimination against women and for their full and equal involvement in social development. This decision was taken after International Women's Year (1975) and the UN Decade for Women (1976-1985), which had previously been proclaimed by the General Assembly. The theme for International Women's Day this year is "Time is Now: Rural and Urban Activists Transforming Women's Lives."

Historically, it so happened that women's position was critical at the beginning of modern times. In most countries women were considered lower than men and unable to make decisions and participate in the political and state building process. Men dominated everywhere in education, medicine, science, politics. The first female doctors, educators, scientists, politicians, businesswomen were similar to those daredevils who, plucking up extraordinary courage and will, dared to break out from gender segregation.

For over a century women have been defending their rights, fighting for equality with men. And even at the beginning of the 21st century, it has not lost its relevance. According to the UN, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, call for change and celebrate properly manifestations of courage and determination by ordinary women who played a crucial role in the history of their countries and communities.
