(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) (read in 4th graf Belgian minister, not German etc) POL-BELGIUM-SYRIA Belgium condemns chemical arms use in Syria BRUSSELS, March 7 (KUNA) -- Belgium condemned Wednesday the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime and rebel groups in Syria, saying that these constitute war crimes.
"Syria became a member of the OPCW in 2013 and must respect its rules," Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said in a statement after meeting with Defense Minister Steven Vandeput and Ahmet Uzumcu, Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in Brussels.
Reynders called on the Syrian regime to provide all clarity over its chemical weapons program, adding the situation in Syria proves, unfortunately, that even 100 years after the massacre at Ypres; this fight is not over yet.
The OPCW plays a crucial role in that fight; thanks to its expert and impartial investigations, the repeated use of chemical weapons in Syria could indeed be proven, said the Belgian minister.
He also stressed the importance of universally applying the Chemical Weapons Convention, calling on North Korea, Egypt, South Sudan, and the Israeli government to accede to the Convention.
Meanwhile, Uzumcu said that OPCW is looking into allegations on the use of toxic chemicals during the ongoing fighting in the enclave of Ghouta in Syria between regime forces and the opposition forces.
"We have a situation center which is following those allegations of use of chlorine and other toxic chemicals and the fact finding mission is collecting the necessary information from different sources," he told an event organized by the Belgian Royal Military Academy.
"And when they feel there is a credible allegation then they will lead the investigation and reach out to witnesses and health personnel to try to determine whether those chemicals were used or not," said Uzumcu. (end) nk.ma
