World witnesses frightening levels of food insecurity

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, March 6 (Petra) -- High levels of food insecurity persist in the world, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Tuesday said in a report, pointing out that this is largely due to conflicts and climate shocks, particularly in East African and Near East countries .

"Some 37 countries are in need of external assistance for food, unchanged from three months ago" the report added, pointing out that civil wars and insecurity are the two reasons behind the rise of poverty levels in 16 countries. Conflicts result in the exodus of millions of people, disruption of agricultural activities, and the surge in prices significantly in some cases . " Meanwhile, inadequate and erratic rainfall poses a growing threat to food security in Southern Africa as well as in Eastern Africa, where many households have suffered from four consecutive drought-affected agricultural seasons, and that the overall cereal output rebounded in Africa in 2017, mostly due to strong gains in Southern Africa following the sharply reduced harvest in 2016. However, cereal production in East Africa saw a 7.2 percent drop, leading to increased stress in various countries.

Aggregate cereal production from Somalia's "dyer" rainy season is estimated to be 20 percent below average as seasonal rains had a late start and an early cessation.

The 37 countries currently in need of external food assistance are Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Haiti, Iraq, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Syria, Uganda, Yemen and Zimbabwe.
