Britain sports icon Roger Bannister pass away aged 88


(MENAFN) The first man recorded to run a mile in less than four minutes, British athlete Roger Bannister, has passed away at the age of 88.

Bannister was recorded in Oxford on May 6, 1954 as the first to run under the four-minute mile, with 59.4 seconds mile.

His family has issued a statement, breaking the tragic news "Sir Roger Bannister, died peacefully in Oxford on 3rd March 2018, aged 88, surrounded by his family who were as loved by him, as he was loved by them."

Prime Minister Theresa May paid respects to the late athlete on social media "Sir Roger Bannister was a great British sporting icon whose achievements were an inspiration to us all. He will be greatly missed."
