India, Jordan ink 12 agreements to deepen coop.


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW DELHI, March 1 (KUNA) -- India and Jordan on Thursday signed 12 agreements and MoUs in different sectors to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Agreements in the fields of defence and fight against terrorism are considered most important pacts both the countries inked after delegation level talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jordanian King Abdullah II in New Delhi as the latter arrived New Delhi Tuesday on a three-day official visit.

Both the leaders discussed a number of bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.

According to a statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the agreements are in the areas of defence cooperation, security, culture, media, health, educational exchange and customs. Other important areas of cooperation are in the field of visa waiver for diplomatic and official passport holders and long term supply of rock phosphate and fertilizer from Jordan to India.

A twining agreement between Indian city of Agra and Jordanian Petra was also signed to work jointly for promotion of social relations by identifying the activities for mutual cooperation in tourism, culture, sports and economic sectors, the ministry added.

King Abdullah II also met Indian President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan today where the latter hosted a banquet in honor of the visiting king.

Earlier on Wednesday, the king had met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and discussed ways of enhancing cooperation especially in the fields of trade, investment, defence, security and tourism. He also visited earlier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi to seek ways of deeper collaboration with Jordanian institutes.

While addressing a gathering organised by Indian Islamic Centre in New Delhi today on the topic of "Islamic Heritage: Promoting Understanding and Moderation", the king underlined the moderation that Islam has stood for. He also stressed the need of coexistence between the followers of different religions to bring peace and prosperity. (end) atk.mt
