Oman- MoTC plans new rail link between Dhofar and Duqm

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Transport and Communication (MoTC) is currently conducting a feasibility study for establishing a railway link between the mineral rich Dhofar governorate and Duqm port, a senior official told reporters on Wednesday.

Once completed, the project is likely to boost the exports of minerals such as limestone and gypsum from Oman, particularly from Shuwaymiyah region in Dhofar governorate.

'Hopefully, we would complete the feasibility study this year. Design and other studies have already been completed. Other formalities such as tendering and appointment of consultants would happen only after the study is completed,' Abdul Rahman al Hatmi, CEO of Oman Rail, said on the sidelines of a press conference organised by the MoTC at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.

'This project is jointly taken by Oman Rail, the Public Authority for Mining and Mining Development Oman,' Hatmi said.
On Oman Rail's future plans, he said there are many plans in the pipeline, which would be implemented gradually. Most important of those is to provide rail link to Salalah port, and also connecting Sohar to Buraimi.

'The rail link to Salalah port is in our plan but the terrain there is such that it would be difficult to implement,' he said while adding that Sohar-Buraimi rail link needs cooperation from other GCC countries.
