Iraq's Sinjar needs USD10bln to be rebuilt
(MENAFN) Sinjar, close to Mount Sinjar and near the border of Syrian Kurdistan, needs almost USD10 billion to be rebuilt after being subjected to massive destruction by the double invasions since 2014, said an official.
According to the Mayor of Sinjar, Mahma Khalil, the federal government has pledged to assist with the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the city, and making it a separate province, but the pledges didn't come to truth yet.
Meanwhile, in a statement to Anadolu Agency, Khalil said that the Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi militiamen and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have caused instability in the region.
"All the roads have been closed from and to Sinjar that's why the IDPs would rather stay in the camps than return to their unstable and devastated city," Khalil told Anadolu Agency.
After the invasion of the city last September by the militiamen of Hashd al-Shaabi, a new mayor was appointed for the city by Hashd al-Shaabi and PKK, but Khalil said that he is still the official mayor of the town.
"The people of Sinjar elected me, and even though the federal government has ensured to respect the votes of the people of the area, therefore I am still officially the mayor of Sinjar," said the Kurdish official.
