Bahrain: 1 sentenced to death, other to life over 2016 bombing

(MENAFN) On Monday, Bahrain's highest appeals court issued a sentence and lengthy jail terms in a mass trial over a fatal 2016 bombing that authorities have linked to Iran.

In addition to provoking their Bahraini citizenship, the Court of Cassation sentenced one defendant to death, the second for life, and six others for lengthy prison terms, according to a statement by the public prosecutor's office.

Although the 2016 bombing, in the eastern village of Sitra, targeted a police patrol, authorities said at the time, the casualties were civilians-a woman was killed and her three children wounded.

Located between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran, Bahrain has been the site of Shiite-led protests calling on an elected government since 2011.
