Jordan- Tarawneh: resolving Palestinian cause key to regional security
(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Feb. 26 (Petra)-Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, said a settlement of the Palestinian cause is the key to peace and security in the Middle East leading to establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state on the pre-June 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital.
During a meeting with his visiting Georgian counterpart, Irakli Kobakhidze, Tarawneh said the House deems the US resolution to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem as "a discouraging step" that will have an impact on continuing peace efforts and is in favor of the forces of extremism and terrorism.
On Syria conflict, he said the absence of prospects for a political solution that preserves this Mideast country's territorial integrity will leave a dark shadow on the future of the region.
Over the past years, we have faced the crisis of wars on our northern and eastern borders in Syria and Iraq, alongside our battle on terrorism and attempts to phase out this phenomenon militarily and ideologically, Tarawneh added.
"We are requested today to dedicate our efforts to counter terrorism across multiple levels," he said.
He pointed out all these challenges have triggered a decline in the living standards of the region's peoples.
On refugee crises, he said Jordan has opened its borders in respect of international law and has received many waves of refugees from Iraq, Libya, Yemen and Syria.
As for joint consultations, he expressed hope official meetings would eventually lead to preliminary understandings on the future of Middle East, which battles turbulence.
During the meeting, the two sides voiced the necessity of developing bilateral ties, especially measures to facilitate the granting of visas and ways to foster cultural, tourist and economic cooperation.
In turn, Kobakhidze said the two countries have common interests,and said visit of the parliamentary delegation aims to strengthen the distinguished bilateral cooperation.
He added his country is interested in bolstering its relations with Amman in the parliamentary, economic and tourism fields.
"Terrorism is an important issue that we must confront together," he said, and added the two countries share common challenges in fighting this phenomenon. AG
