Sameer Verma lifts Swiss Open title

Young Indian shuttler, Sameer Verma put in one of the best performances of his career to outclass former world number two, Jan O Jorgensen to clinch the men's singles title at the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament on Sunday.

The 23-year-old showed great determination to stun Jorgensen 21-15 21-13 and take back home a hefty sum of USD 150,000.

Sameer, just like his older brother Sourabh Verma, took to badminton early.

He won the Bahrain International Series and Bahrain International Challenge in 2013 and the Syed Modi International Badminton Championships in January 2017.

Sameer is currently ranked world number 46, but his latest triumph should propel his rank.

Sameer has joined the list of elite players like Srikanth and Prannoy, who won the Swiss Open title in 2015 and 2016. This is his first title of the season.

The youngster is one of the many players mentored by Pullela Gopichand's Academy.

Jorgensen was making a comeback after more than 7 months following an injury.

Earlier in the day, Parupalli Kashyap clinched the Austrian Open with a 23-21, 21-14 victory over June Wei Cheam of Malaysia.

"I was confident of doing well but I didn't expect an easy final. I had beaten him narrowly in Hong Kong, so I knew he is a difficult player to beat but he is not 100 percent fit yet." Sameer told PTI.
