Ambassador Al-Otaibi, the UNSC President for February and Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the UN, made this statement to KUNA, late on Saturday, after the UNSC adopted Resolution 2401, calling for cessation of hostilities in Syria for 30 days and allowing entry of humanitarian aid to the needy without obstruction.

The humanitarian resolution, jointly drafted by Kuwait and Sweden, is designed to improve the situation in all Syrian regions, particularly at the present period, which has been witnessing drastic deterioration in East Ghouta and Idlib, in addition to the grave escalation in the past few weeks.

The adoption of the 2401 to impose a truce in Syria for 30 days reflects the success of Kuwait's diplomacy, he said.

Al-Otaibi said that the process to prepare the draft paper took almost two weeks, affirming that Kuwait and Sweden worked very hard to make sure that the UNSC would take a unified stance on this issue.

The UNSC had vetoed in the past several resolutions connected with the Syrian crisis, indicated the Kuwaiti diplomat, adding that after obtaining the approval of the council, it was time to implement such a resolution.

The resolution, he added, explicitly calls for ending siege of regions all over Syria, cessation of military operations, grave breaches of the international humanitarian law and human rights law.

"The State of Kuwait views this decision as the minimum that must be done by the Security Council toward the Syrian people who have been suffering from hard and tragic humanitarian conditions since seven years ago," he said further.

Al-Otaibi said that the situation in Syria as a whole required from the world to take decisions to put an end to the violence and allow humanitarian aid to reach those who are in need.

The resolution will not resolve the Syrian crisis, but it is part of the continuous global efforts to bring peace in Syria, said the diplomat.

The UNSC adopted the Kuwaiti-Swedish draft to allow a ceasefire and the possibility delivering aid. (end) asf.gta
