Kuwait- French, German leaders to discuss UN Syria resolution with Putin

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) PARIS, Feb 25 (KUNA) -- French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday will hold a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss the implementation of the latest UN Security Council resolution on Syria and to seek to draw up a Road Map to get "lasting peace" in that country, the Elysee Palace said early Sunday.

The latest UN resolutions, sponsored by Kuwait and Sweden, calls for a cease-fire "without delay" in Syria for 30 days and the delivery of humanitarian aid to beleaguered areas and the evacuation of many hundreds of wounded.

UN Security Resolution 2401 was voted late Saturday after several days of negotiations and amendments and it is considered a success for consensus in the Council and a recognition of the skillful diplomatic intervention of Sweden and Kuwait, which the latter also holds the rotating presidency of the UN body.

Macron's office also indicated that Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian would be travelling to Moscow on February 27 for more talks with Russia on the Syrian question.

The French statement criticised "the indiscriminate bombardment" of Eastern Ghouta, near the Syrian capital, where around 500 people perished in the past week and many hundreds more were wounded.

The cease-fire should allow for the alleviation of some of the suffering in Eastern Ghouta and other areas under siege and attack from the Damascus regime.

"It is a first indispensable step and we will be extremely vigilant on its concrete implementation in the coming hours and days," Macron's office said.

"The truce must be respected and humanitarian convoys must be able to reach the areas the most hit by violence and deprivation. The emergency medical evacuations must be implemented without obstacle," it added.

The French Foreign Ministry confirmed, separately, that Le Drian would meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday in Moscow with the aim of "restarting international efforts to arrive at a political solution to this conflict." (end) jk.gta
