Qatar- 85 firms taking part in Seasonal Dates Market

DOHA: Seasonal Dates Market at Souq Waqif, which has brought together around 85 local and foreign dates companies at one place, is attracting huge crowd. The participating companies are specialised in the production, distribution and supply of dates from Kuwait, Oman, Iran, Tunisia and Algeria and other countries. The month-long market will run until March 15.

The dates market is offering traders, entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises the opportunity to display and promote various date produce as well as dates-related food and industrial products.

Talking to The Peninsula, Nooh Al Yazeedi, Owner of Othough Dates and Sweets- a local company said: 'We have brought in some creative ideas of presenting dates for our local and international customers. Our international customers have some unique way of eating dates. We have a lot of variety for them, which include, dates with caramel syrup topping, dates with nuts, dates with coffee powder topping, coconut and dates biscuits and many more.

Talking about the sale in the last two days, he said: 'Our stall has attracted a lot of customers. Yesterday 30kgs of dates were sold out. Today we had to prepare new boxes of 2kgs and 1kg. As people find it hard to go to our shop at Tawaar Mall, they came here and bought many boxes.

Abdul Hadi Al Hajri, owner of a Qatari company, said: 'The second day was better than the first day and third day was better than the second one. Local customers are coming daily to buy dates from our stall. Especially in morning many local ladies and expats come to buy dates from us.

Companies coming from different countries claimed that, they received a lot of customers in two days which was more than they had expected. 'We are selling two types of dates during this month-long market - Al Khalas Malaki and Al Khalas.

Al Khalas Malaki dates are rich in sugar which is suitable for young people. Al Khalas dates are for people with diabetes or the people who are not fond of eating a sugar.

'The sale during two days was more than we expected, as the location of our stall is not near the entrance. We have sold out 20,000 dates per day till now and now we are expecting more customers in coming days, Saeed Albehaih, Owner of Mkhzon Company from Kuwait.

Many local and expats flocked to seasonal dates market to enjoy the variety of local and dates coming from different countries. The dates at the seasonal dates market cost much more less than that available in supermarkets.

Daniela, Qatar based expat said : 'I saw this market yesterday and it caught my attention. I visited it and after tasting many variety of dates I am confused about what to buy. I brought my mother here with me today to select the best variety. The prices are very low as compared to supermarkets.

The Seasonal Dates Market is open for all local investors to market their products in foreign markets and gain insight into the expertise of participating countries in a bid to improve the quality of local date products and strengthen its position in the foreign markets.

The Seasonal Dates Market is open to visitors daily from 8am to 12 noon and from 3pm to 10pm.
