Qatar- Video Games Live Concert delights crowd

DOHA: With Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra's stirring rendition of a rich repertoire of compositions from the most popular video games of all time coupled with striking background visuals, the highly acclaimed Video Games Live concert spectacular last night certainly did not disappoint.

Led by award-winning Irish composer and conductor Eimear Noone, the orchestra received ovations as it performed medleys of familiar themes from renowned video games in synch with memorable video montages, breathtaking lights, and special effects.

Welcoming hundreds in the crowd at the start of the show, Noone expressed absolute delight to perform in what she dubbed 'one of the most fascinating cities in the world with one of the world's best orchestras. The concert was a fitting tribute to the most beloved video games which tugged at the heartstrings of the young and young at heart in attendance at Qatar National Convention Centre's Al Mayassa Theatre yesterday night.

American instrumentalist and vocalist Laura Intravia mesmerised the audience as she performed songs in various languages as well as played flute and piano.

Under the baton of choirmaster Felicitas Fuchs, the Qatar Philharmonic Choir along with the Qatar Concert Choir staged a stellar performance of the songs accompanied by Qatar Philharmonic.

Themes of God of War, Journey, Assassin's Creed II and World of Warcraft were among the pieces which were performed at the unique show which showcased the power of gaming and music.

Gamers and music enthusiasts enjoyed the concert as much as the varied activities organized on the sidelines of the show. Hours before the show, Virtuocity, Qatar's first video game and eSports capital, started providing gamers several exciting activities which provided an added value to the whole concert experience. An area which offered free play on the latest game systems was set up at the venue.

There was also a music-based zone which enabled concertgoers to gamify music and play through favorite songs. In addition, attendees also enjoyed an area which showcased ways to see video game music in a new light in an interactive setting.

The venue was turned into gamers'hub with over a dozen stalls offering a wide array of merchandise from t-shirts and caps printed with favourite video game characters to books, toys and artworks. A number of cosplayers garbed in elaborate costumes paraded onstage prior to the show.

A pre-show performance featuring international Lebanese vocalist Sammy Clark singing the Arabic version of music from famous anime Grendizer attracted a huge crowd.

It was the third consecutive year Video Games Live had been performed in Doha. Started in 2002, the show is an immersive concert event created and produced by well-known game industry veteran and superstar Tommy Tallarico. It has seen top orchestras and choirs around the world perform along with exclusive synchronized video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, well-known internet solo performers, electronic percussion, live action and unique interactive segments resulting to a complete entertainment experience.

Qatar Philharmonic's next concert will be 'Mahler's First Symphony on March 3, 7.30pm at the Katara Opera House. Led by maestro Tung-Chieh Chuang, the show will play Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103 and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D Major.
