DOHA: To ensure the supply of green fodder in local market, the Minister of Economy and Commerce, H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohamed Al Thani, paid an inspection visit to a project which produces green fodder by using treated water in Umm Ghuwailina, Salwa Road.
The project, implemented by First Agriculture, a subsidiary of Al Qamra Holding, is one of the three projects that were awarded to the private sector to encourage them to participate in food security projects by investing in green fodder production.
'The project is adding about 2,000 tonnes of green fodder to the existing supply to the market in 30 to 45 days, Dr Hossam Eldin Mostafa, CEO of Al Qamra Holding told The Peninsula. He said that the company harvested first crop of green fodder on January 15 this year and second crop about 2,000 tonnes is ready to harvest.
'We will start harvesting within a couple of days, said Mostafa adding that under the project the company has 38 farms spread over an area of 240 hectors arable land.
Speaking on the prices of fodder, Mostafa said that the company offers its products at wholesale rates therefore it is competitive and lower compared to other places.
He said that the stock of previous harvest was completely sold out and now buyers can place their orders in advance for new stock as the company is going to start harvesting within a couple days. The Minister of Economy and Commerce accompanied by Al Qamra Holding Chairman, Hamad Saleh Al Qamra and a number of company officials during the visit, learned about the progress of the project and production methods. The products of the project were offered for sale in the local market in mid-January on scheduled time. The Minister also listened to a detailed explanation of the modern irrigation methods and systems, which use treated water and reduce water consumption while having positive effects on the environment and reducing the temperature, that help ease the maintenance and reduce production cost. The Minister also learned about the modern techniques used in agriculture to produce high-quality green fodder. The Minister thanked the officials of the project, which will help in increasing the supply of high-quality green fodder in the local market at competitive prices.
Al Qamra Holding Chairman said that First Agriculture executed the project in record time using state-of-the-art technology in order to get the maximum yield from the cultivated area and help in reaching self-sufficiency of green fodder.
