Arabic hosts 1 percent of online content


(MENAFN) Despite only accounting for less than 3.5 percent of the 292 million native Arabic populations, Jordan is responsible for creating around 75% of the Arabic content on digital platforms.

Less than 1% of total global online content is in Arabic and less than 0.2% of global digital content is hosted in the Middle East and North Africa, although native Arabic speakers represent about 4.5% of the world population, according to the Guardian.

The world celebrates the International Day for Mother Language on February 21 each year since 2000. It promotes linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It aims to raise awareness about languages' improtant role in conserving and improving the cultural heritage of nations.

The theme of this year's international day will be Linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development. "To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages," the UN wrote on their website.
