MOSCOW, Feb 19 (KUNA) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on Monday for establishing an integrated security order in the Arabian Gulf.
Russia reaffirms necessity of establishing a cohesive system bonding regional countries including Iran in the Arabian Gulf region, said Lavrov in his statement at Valdai Club Conference on the Middle East.
Lavrov expressed his belief that cooperation is "possible" to launch dialogue involving Iran and the GCC countries for establishing such a security order in the region.
The Russian proposal does not imply intention to dissolve the GCC, Lavrov said, indicating that the proposed order could be set up with support from what he termed "external players." Such support can be provided; he elaborates, by the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooeration, the European Union and the five permanent members of the Security Council.
Moscow's international-regional clout became in question and appeared on the verge of extinction with collapse of the Soviet Union in early 90s. However, the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, has wasted no opportunity to restore his nation's influence as a super power in various regions, namely neighboring republics and Syria.
On Syria, Lavrov accused the United States of plotting to partition the nation, namely seceding areas east of the Euphrates in the north.
Lavrov, whose leadership robustly supports the Damascus regime, has claimed that a successful settlement in Syria hinges on Washington's commitment not to divide Syria.
On Iran and Israel, he rejected Tehran's slogan, "wiping out Israel," stressing that Moscow "wants to see the Israelis sense security." But he added that security should be enjoyed by all peoples of the regions.
The Valdai Discussion Club was established in 2004. It was named after Lake Valdai, which is located close to Veliky Novgorod, where the club's first meeting took place. The club's goal is to promote dialogue between Russian and international intellectual elite. (end) as.rk
