Doha: The Quranic Botanic Garden (QBG), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), recently welcomed the second batch of students to its educational program on Food Security catering to secondary schools for girls in Qatar.
Students from five schools participated in Food Security program, including Dukhan Secondary School for Girls, Al Bayan Secondary Independent School for Girls, Umm Hakim Secondary School for Girls, and Al Wakra Independent Secondary School for Girls, as well pupils from QF's Awsaj Academy.
Forty students participated in lectures and practical workshops as part of the educational program, with QBG keen to develop the practical knowledge of the students in the fields of agriculture and food security. The workshops provided basic information on the agricultural challenges that correspond to the expansion of agriculture in Qatar. The seven practical workshops include a field trip to the country's leading farms in the field of integrated agricultural production.
The QBG workshops covered several topics, including land preparation and processing for agriculture, soil properties in Qatar and their improvement factors, modern irrigation methods - examples and models, the production of vegetable crops under Qatari climatic conditions, the importance of seeds and their vital role in agricultural operations, integrated pest control, plant nutrition, optimal methods of high productivity, organic agriculture, opportunities and challenges in Qatar, hydroponics and their applications in Qatar, marketing of Qatari agricultural products; the role of agricultural extension in supporting food security in Qatar; and the initiatives to support agriculture in Qatar.
QBG collaborated with relevant organizations in Qatar to source the best experts for the students, including the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Hassad Food Company, AlMeera, Qatar Development Bank, and a group of Qatari farms and private sector companies to share their cutting-edge knowledge.
QBG delivers the educational program in the Labs Hall at its technical building located at Qatar Foundation Plant Nursery. QBG allocated a specific microscale farm area for students to hold all the practical and educational works, focusing on practical experience that contributes to raising students' practical qualifications and linking them to the field of food security.
Fatma Saleh Al Khulaifi, Project Manager, Quranic Botanic Garden, said, 'The QBG educational program on Food Security in Qatar came in response to the national call of His Highness the Emir to improve the food security system in Qatar. At QBG, we hope to inspire the current generation of Qatari youth to address the area of food security and the natural and environmental challenges facing agriculture in Qatar in light of water scarcity and weather conditions.
