DOHA: The transportation of thousands of camels owned by Qataris coming from Saudi Arabia via Kuwait is expected to start from Kuwait's Al Shuwaikh Port next week, a source said. Saudi Arabia stopped the camels from entering Qatar through Salwa and Abu Samra border posts.

The source told The Peninsula on condition of anonymity: 'The owners of the camels were forced by the Saudi authorities to transport their camels only through Kuwaiti or Saudi nationals. They were also forced to pay an amount ranging between QR2500 and QR3000 per camel. They have exploited us in the transportation of the camels. It is not fair to pay the amount. No reason is given for the exploitation of the camel owners, he added.

He said that the border checkpoints were closed three days ago for transportation of camels outside Saudi Arabia to Kuwait. He hoped the first shipment of camels' will resume on February 19 or 20, adding that more than 30 camels have already been transported to Qatar with other Qatari camels that took part in race in Kuwait.

Regarding the number of Qatari camels who have reached Kuwait, he said the total number was not final as more camels are coming from there but so far the count is more than 6,000. 'According to the committee, which is responsible for counting Qatari camels that reached Kuwait from Saudi, is 5,500, he said.

There are more than 22,000 camels and other livestock seized in Saudi Arabia. Owners were also banned from sending fodder to their camels.

About other livestock, he said till now there is no clear information. The Compensation Claims Committee, which was established to protect the rights of residents and receives complaints from people affected by the ongoing blockade, said earlier majority of the complaints were from the people, who lost their animals in Saudi.
