Egyptian army kills 3 'takfiris', arrests 224 wanted criminals

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Cairo, Feb. 16 (Petra)-- Three "takfiris" were killed by the Egyptian armed forces in northern and central Sinai on Friday, the army said in a statement.

It said forces also arrested 224 "wanted criminal elements", destroyed 10 4x4 vehicles and 68 weapons caches, and detonated 28 explosive devices planted in the field of operations on Friday.

Egypt launched Operation Sinai 2018 week ago, involving land, naval and air forces, as well as the police and border guards, targeting "terrorist and criminal elements and organizations" in northern and central Sinai.

The term takfiri refers to those who accuse others of being infidels, often as a justification for using violence against them.

Forces involved in the operation have also destroyed nine farms used to grow illegal narcotics and seized large amounts of drugs and communication facilities, said the statement.
