Qatar to have over 2,000km of cycle lanes: Emir tweets

Qatar plans to have more than 2,000km of cycle lanes in the next few years. Doha already boasts of hundreds of kilometres of cycling lanes across the country.

This was tweeted by the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday on the occasion of the National Sport Day.

'Our ambition on the National Sport Day is to continue Qatar's march in all fields of sports. We aspire to execute more than 2000 km of cycle lanes by the end of 2022, Emir tweeted on his official twitter handle.

The Emir participated in the National Sport Day by cycling on the towers area and Doha Corniche to encourage people to keep practicing different kinds of sports activities for good health and fitness.

Ashghal has already built hundreds of kilometres of cycling lanes on express ways and on local approach roads to ensure that cycle paths are located away from the right-of-way and keep cyclists safe.

The President of Ashghal Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi said yesterday that in 2017, Ashghal completed more than 242 km of cycling paths on expressways and 110 km will be constructed in 2018. Last year 987 km of

cycle routes were built on the local roads and 239 km more will be laid out in 2018.

The newly built paths are already a hit with cyclists as we can see scores on them utilizing the routes, especially on weekends.
