(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Students Allahabad University yesterday went on a rampage, setting fire to a bus in protest against the killing of a Dalit student.
The angry students also laid siege to the house of District Magistrate Suhas L Y, police said.
Dalit student Dilip Saroj was brutally assaulted by four men, and died on Sunday night after slipping into a coma. He was attacked outside a restaurant in Colonelganj on Friday night.
A waiter at the restaurant, Munna Singh Chauhan, has been arrested and two policemen have been suspended.
Angry students aligned to the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha (SYS) and the All India Students' Association (AISA) took out a protest march yesterday and raised anti-government and anti-police slogans.
They demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits, and also sought adequate compensation for the dead student's family.
Saroj was a law student and hailed from Pratapgarh. A video of the killing has gone viral, leaving the police red-faced.
No one in the Uttar Pradesh government has reacted to the gruesome killing which incensed the opposition parties.
Health Minister Siddhartha Nath Singh, a legislator from Allahabad and spokesman for the Uttar Pradesh government, refused to comment.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has slammed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the killing of the Dalit student.
In a statement, she said the atmosphere in the country and the state had become 'vicious and violent due to the politics pursued by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also launched a scathing attack on the government and accused the chief minister of failing to check soaring crime in the state.
The former chief minister said the daylight killing of the student had proved that criminals had no fear of law.
'On one hand innocent aspiring youngsters are facing such fate at the hands of criminals and on the other the police are targeting innocent people in encounters, the 44-year-old said in a statement.
He asked the government to give the student's family Rs5mn in compensation.
Yadav added that in the 10 months of BJP rule in Uttar Pradesh, insecurity has crept into the minds of people and no section of the society was feeling safe.
The twin murder of a mother and son in Meerut, the brutal assault on a milkman in Bulandshahr, the fake encounter by police in Noida, the triple murders in Bareilly and the murder of a trader in Allahabad had proved beyond doubt that all talk of peace and prosperity in the state was a farce.
'With such soaring crime, the chief minister is inviting people to invest in UP. Who will invest? Yadav asked.
